Contract award and scope
Certified Coatings Company was awarded the contract to steam clean, spot blast and repaint all structural steel on this 2,500’ bridge across the Sacramento River, including the lift span and the 208’ tall lift towers.
Importance of the bridge
This two-lane structure is a vital transportation link for vehicular traffic, and it spans a vital transportation link for recreational boat traffic and commercial ship traffic servicing the Port of Stockton.
Challenges and solutions
The primary challenges were keeping vehicular and marine traffic both flowing. Only one lane of the bridge could be closed during nighttime hours, and the lift span had to be opened at any time within a 4-hour notice. This required designing and installing scaffolding for access and containment that would not interfere with the operation and movement of the lift span and massive concrete counterweights that travel up and down inside the framing of the towers.
Project completion
Certified Coatings successfully rehabilitated the protective coating system on this vital structure below budget and well ahead of schedule.
